How to: Install/Replace a floppy drive.
Solution:
Turn off the computer and all components and remove the computer cover. Remove the old floppy drive and install the new floppy drive. Turn on the computer and update your BIOS to recognize the new floppy drive.
NOTE 1: This task should be done by a qualified computer technician.
NOTE 2: If the floppy drive being installed is a 2.88 MB, the BIOS and the floppy controller card in the computer may need to be upgraded.
CAUTION: The following procedure will expose the internal components to possible damage from Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Observe ESD precautions whenever handling computer components.
1) Turn off the computer and all components.
2) Remove the computer cover.
3) Locate the drive to be removed inside the computer.
NOTE: The drive may be anchored to a metal casing along with other drives.
4) Remove the old floppy drive:
a) Disconnect the drive from the support brackets or casing.
b) Remove the data ribbon cable from the drive by grasping the cable and connector and pulling it out of the drive socket. Fold it back out of the way.
c) Remove the power source from the drive by pulling on the white plug. (The power source is the 4-colored wire that is attached to the white connector.)
WARNING: Do not pull on the 4 colored wires. Fold it back out of the way.
NOTE: Keep track of all loose screws and unplugged wires and cables.
d) Gently remove the old floppy drive from the computer.
5) Install the new floppy drive:
a) Locate the drive bay, into which the new drive will be installed.
b) Fit the drive into the drive bay before connecting wires or installing any necessary brackets to hold the drive into place.
c) Remove the screws that will be needed to hold the drive into place.
d) Find and attach the ribbon cable to the back of the drive.
NOTE: The stripped or red edge of the ribbon cable MUST BE aligned to pin 1. To locate Pin 1 for the floppy drive, consult the documentation that came with the floppy drive.
e) Find and attach the power source to the back of the drive. (The power source is the 4-colored wire that is attached to the white connector.)
f) Replace the computer cover.
g) Turn on your computer and update your BIOS to recognize the new floppy drive.
NOTE: Consult the computer manual in order to update your BIOS.
